Two Outstanding Sessions
Topic: Literacy: Innovation & Inclusion.
Session 1 - Metafictive Picture Books:
Breaking the “Rules” to Engage & Entertain Metafictive techniques create new ways
for readers to interact with texts, offering pleasurable & thought-provoking experiences. This
presentation identifies metafictive devices such as self-aware texts & experimental illustrative
styles. Participants will explore contemporary metafictive pictures books & discuss strategies
for supporting students’ understanding of & experience with metafiction.
Session 2 -Diversity in Youth Literature: Where We Are in 2017 and Where We’ve Been
Despite increasing national diversity there remains a paucity of high quality diversity responsive
youth literature. A brief historic overview will set the stage for today’s landscape. Participants will
then explore diverse youth literature published in 2016-2017 & online sources to deepen
knowledge of diverse books & authors, as well as contemporary issues.
